Consultancy Services for Preparation of a Dredging Project at Durres Port

The Challenge

In order to allow vessels with a size of 30,000 DWT or 1,700 TEU to visit the Port of Durres in the near future, the entrance channel, the basin and berths of the port should be deepened through a Capital Dredging Campaign, to be tendered by Durres Port Authority. For this reason Durres Port Authority contracted HPC to elaborate the design and complete tender documents for the dredging works to deepen the entrance channel and the basin of its port and to conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The studies were accompanied by field investigations, such as geotechnical investigations, bathymetric surveys and environmental analysis of sediment samples. In order to allow vessels with a size of 30,000 DWT or 1,700 TEU to visit the Port of Durres in the near future, the entrance channel, the basin and berths of the port should be deepened through a Capital Dredging Campaign, to be tendered by Durres Port Authority. Tasks Performed

  • Execution, processing and interpretation of bathymetric surveys
  • Execution, processing and interpretation of geotechnical surveys, such as vibro-coring, cone penetration tests, 2D electrical imaging and sub-bottom profiling
  • Laboratory analysis of soil samples
  • Design of dredging works and estimation of dredging volumes and costs
  • Elaboration of Terms of References for dredging works
  • Finalisation of complete tender documents for dredging works
  • Environmental Impact Assessment, including information review, description of legislative and regulative considerations, evaluation of marine sediment quality, investigation of ecological impacts, investigation of socio-economic impacts, determination, mitigation and management of impacts, and preparation of a Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP)

Benefit

  • Client received comprehensive tender documents for dredging works that considered operational, engineering and environmental requirements
