<p>In light of an investment opportunity on the Adriatic Sea, HHLA International asked HPC to perform technical due diligence for a multi-purpose terminal in Trieste, Italy. Beyond analysing existing assets a nd operations, a focus was also set on further development options and their optimum operations. In that respect, a smart phasing plan was prepared, all owing a stepwise approach to development. Further to the in-depth assessment of the actual terminal’s operations, equipment, IT, safety, security, and environmental aspects, the intermodal connection to the hinterland was vita l for expected growth. All relevant findings were used as inputs for the fin ancial analysis and assessment of feasibility.</p>

<p>Guyana shares its borders with two northern Brazi lian states, Roraima and Para, and has traditional ties with the state of Am azonas. In the light of currently limited trade activities, the governments of both countries have been working towards their enhancement of trade, econ omic and physical integration. One means of integration may be the establish ment of a Land Transport Link connecting Guyana, Roraima and Amazonas, to fa cilitate foreign trade between Guyana and Brazil on the one hand and the tra nsit of cargo to/from the landlocked states Roraima and Amazonas via a futur e deep-water port in Guyana. Against this background, IDB contracted HPC to establish the size and volume of the shipping market in Guyana as well as th e potential cargo to/from the Brazilian states Amazonas and Roraima that may be diverted to a deep-water port in Guyana.</p>

<p>The Port of Caldera is Costa Rica's main port on the Pacific Ocean. SPC and SPGC are presently managing the cargo operations at t he port with a 20 year concession until 2026 and the possibility of an exten sion afterwards. Caldera Port primarily handles dry bulk, containers, genera l cargo/break bulk and RoRo cargo, but also some liquid bulk, tuna and reefe r fruit palettes. In addition, the port is called by some cruise vessels. In order to raise the efficiency of the port, HPC was asked to elaborate a Mas ter Plan for Caldera Port. The aim of the Master Plan was to assess the futu re potential for cargo handling at the port and to analyse the technical and operational requirements as well as financial prospects associated with the restructuring and expansion of the port.</p>

<p>Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) is operating one of the largest rail networks in the United States. Among many other UP termina ls throughout the western and mid-western part of the United States, UP is o perating four intermodal terminals in the Chicago area, Illinois. Currently these terminals are operating at or close to design capacity. Therefore, HPC prepared a Master Plan on four UP intermodal terminals in the Chicago area. The aim was to increase the capacity of all four terminals by both process re-design as well as altering the operational concepts, e.g. implementation of wide-span cranes. Also a strategy had to be developed for the definition of the order of construction at the four facilities as well as for the alloc ation of volumes between the facilities during construction phases.</p>
