<p>The Port of Caldera is Costa Rica's main port on the Pacific Ocean. SPC and SPGC are presently managing the cargo operations at t he port with a 20 year concession until 2026 and the possibility of an exten sion afterwards. Caldera Port primarily handles dry bulk, containers, genera l cargo/break bulk and RoRo cargo, but also some liquid bulk, tuna and reefe r fruit palettes. In addition, the port is called by some cruise vessels. In order to raise the efficiency of the port, HPC was asked to elaborate a Mas ter Plan for Caldera Port. The aim of the Master Plan was to assess the futu re potential for cargo handling at the port and to analyse the technical and operational requirements as well as financial prospects associated with the restructuring and expansion of the port.</p>

<p>The overall objective of the assignment was to el aborate a strategic master plan for the development of the Port of Chittagon g, which should also serve as a tool to identify potential projects to be fu nded under PPP schemes or directly by ADB. The consultancy services encompas sed a comprehensive traffic forecast. It further provided assessments of cur rent port operations including customs procedures, hinterland traffic and po rt connectivity of all deployed port equipment and installations, as well as of existing and planned maritime and landside infrastructure. HPC developed short-term improvement measures and elaborated a multi-phase port developme nt framework. This implied considering several expansion scenarios on the ba sis of site investigations at the Karnaphuli River as well as at the shore o f the Bengal Bay.</p>

<p>Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) is operating one of the largest rail networks in the United States. Among many other UP termina ls throughout the western and mid-western part of the United States, UP is o perating four intermodal terminals in the Chicago area, Illinois. Currently these terminals are operating at or close to design capacity. Therefore, HPC prepared a Master Plan on four UP intermodal terminals in the Chicago area. The aim was to increase the capacity of all four terminals by both process re-design as well as altering the operational concepts, e.g. implementation of wide-span cranes. Also a strategy had to be developed for the definition of the order of construction at the four facilities as well as for the alloc ation of volumes between the facilities during construction phases.</p>

<p>As a leading company in the international dry bulk se ctor, FLSmidth provide a wide range of services including planning, developm ent, construction and maintenance of dry bulk terminals and equipment, such as vessel unloaders, conveyor belts and various kinds of extraction technolo gy. In Mesaieed, Qatar, FLSmidth is engaged in increasing the throughput cap acity of the Qatar Primary Materials Co. (QPMC) - a dry bulk terminal specia lised in the import of gabbro - by implementing new conveyor systems. While QPMC aims for an annual handling capacity of 30 million tonnes p.a., FL Smidth, who have to commit themselves to a throughput capacity which will be subject to contractual penalties if not reached in practice, believe that t his capacity could only be realised under optimal operational framework cond itions. To improve the degree of confidence in committing to a certain throu ghput capacity, FLSmidth assigned HPC to analyse the terminal system by mean s of a dynamic simulation study with particular focus on realisable throughp ut, required framework conditions and possible bottleneckse.</p>

<p>IQ Martrade Holding und Management GmbH contemplated investment in a dedicated deepwater port for the handling of minerals such a s iron ore and copper concentrate in San Juan de Marcona. The investor asked HPC to explore the potential of the project in-depth within a feasibility s tudy. The conditions in the San Juan Bay, such as deep waters and natural pr otection from waves support the development of a port able to handle very la rge bulk carriers. In the hinterland of San Juan, numerous mining projects w ere in exploration or in production at the time the study was conducted. The development of these mines was impaired by the lack of a suitable port near by. Other ports were located approx. 500 km to the north and the south of Sa n Juan. HPC conducted a market and competition analysis to estimate the mark et potential and the economic impact of a port development in San Juan</p>

Challenge
The Port of Caldera is Costa Rica's main port on the Pacific Ocean. SPC and SPGC are presently managing the cargo operations at the port with a 20 year concession until 2026 and the possibility of an extension afterwards. Caldera Port primarily handles dry bulk, containers, general cargo/break bulk and RoRo cargo, but also some liquid bulk, tuna and reefer fruit palettes. In addition, the port is called by some cruise vessels. In order to raise the efficiency of the port, HPC was asked to elaborate a Master Plan for Caldera Port. The aim of the Master Plan was to assess the future potential for cargo handling at the port and to analyse the technical and operational requirements as well as financial prospects associated with the restructuring and expansion of the port.

Market assessment including the analysis of the current macro-economic development and growth prospects in Costa Rica
Port competition analysis for Costa Rica and Central America's Pacific Coast
Elaboration of traffic forecasts for all types of cargo currently handled at Caldera Port
Elaboration of a phased port development plan, including terminal layout design, equipment requirements, management and operations procedures, staffing requirement in view of the forecasted cargo volumes, trade direction, vessel sizes, storage time etc.
Preparation of a financial analysis comprising the estimation of Capex, Opex and revenues for the Port and the elaboration of a cash flow analysis
Recommendations regarding the establishment of new co-operations with SPC/SPGC's Clients
Assessment of SPC/SPGC's organizational structure and recommendations for improvements in the light of planned port development and proposed operational changes
