Tim Lemke, Senior Consultant for Terminal Simulation and Process Optimization in Port Logistics
Tim Lemke is a Senior Consultant for terminal simulation at HPC Hamburg Port Consulting. His work focuses on analysing, modelling, and optimizing processes in container terminals and across the maritime supply chain. Through simulation models, he helps make complex operations more transparent, identifies bottlenecks, and provides a solid basis for planning, operational, and investment decisions.
When Tim looks at a container terminal, he does not simply see cranes, vehicles, and container movements. What interests him is how everything interacts: where processes run smoothly, where delays occur, and where it becomes evident whether a system truly works in everyday operations. It is precisely this interplay of components that continues to fascinate him. Because this is where it becomes clear whether a terminal is not only well designed on paper, but also performs effectively in practice.
His interest in port operations, logistics, and traffic flows began during his studies in business mathematics. Ironically, it was a course not known for sparking enthusiasm – Introduction to Transport and Logistics – that set everything in motion. Despite its rather sober delivery, it opened his eyes to the complexity, dynamics, and structure of transport and cargo flows. This initial spark eventually led him, via an internship, to HPC – and into the field of terminal simulation.
There, he found a domain that continues to engage him: recreating real-world terminal and logistics processes in simulation models and understanding how they actually behave – ideally, but also under the constraints of day-to-day operations. What drives him is the ambition to bring models as close to reality as possible. For Tim, it is not about abstract theory, but about creating reliable decision-making tools for real challenges in ports, terminals, and intermodal logistics systems.
Simulation as a Tool for Better Decisions
Tim works at the intersection of data, model logic, and operational reality. His simulation projects help make complex interdependencies visible and support more informed planning decisions. Typical questions include: How do changes in terminal operations affect throughput and waiting times? Where are the critical bottlenecks? What infrastructure is actually required? And which measures will lead to sustainable improvements in performance?
Over time, Tim has contributed to more than 30 simulation projects covering large parts of the maritime supply chain – from vessel traffic simulation and quay and yard processes to terminal, intermodal, and landside operations. In doing so, he supports clients in using simulation as a decision-making tool – whether for evaluating infrastructure measures, planning capacities, optimizing operations, or preparing investment decisions.
Through this work, he has developed a particularly sharp perspective on traffic flows and process logic. Working with models on a daily basis means not just observing processes, but understanding their underlying structure. Perhaps that is what continues to draw him to terminals: they offer a concentrated view of whether complex systems truly function.
The Best Solutions Are Developed Together
Tim’s work is not just about building models, but also about how solutions are developed. His approach is driven by a clear technical ambition – and a certain competitive spirit: to keep refining a solution until it is convincing in every detail. At the same time, he sees this process as a team effort.
Even during his studies, collaborative thinking played a key role. Tackling complex mathematical problems, developing approaches, and challenging them critically often required the collective intelligence of a team. This is exactly what he values in HPC’s simulation team today. Projects involve intensive discussions, careful evaluation, and continuous refinement until a solution is both robust and widely supported.
For Tim, this shared commitment to quality is essential. Especially in terminal simulation, there are rarely simple answers. Bringing together different perspectives – analytical, operational, and strategic – is therefore key to developing solutions that truly work.
Team Spirit – On and Off the Field
Teamwork also plays an important role in his personal life. Tim is the captain of a competitive tennis team and enjoys being part of a group. Playing together, supporting each other, and reflecting on matches afterwards – often together with the opposing team – are integral to the experience. For him, team spirit is not just a concept, but something that has to prove itself in everyday situations.
His commitment to collaboration and responsibility is also reflected within the company. For the past three years, he has been actively involved in the works council, most recently as deputy chair. What motivates him is the opportunity to gain insight into the organisation, contribute ideas, and support colleagues.
Listening, mediating, and thinking ahead – many of these skills are closely related to his work in simulation. In both contexts, the goal is to understand structures, make relationships visible, and collaboratively improve systems so that they function better for everyone.
