My Internship Experience at HPC
Hi, I´m Ties! From April to July 2024, I worked as an intern at HPC, where I was a part of the simulation team. My main project focused on improving terminal traffic flow using HPC's simulation tool. Beyond this, I had the chance to explore various aspects of the company by contributing to other projects, attending an international conference on terminal operations, and engaging with my colleagues to learn more about their work.
These experiences helped me develop valuable skills in simulation, project management, and problem-solving. I also gained deeper insights into the port industry and container terminal operations.
A Collaborative and Supportive Environment
Working at HPC was incredibly rewarding. I appreciated the flat hierarchy, which allowed me to interact with everyone in the office, regardless of their position. My colleagues were always approachable and willing to help, taking the time to work through challenges together. This support and guidance were invaluable to me.
The collaborative atmosphere, coupled with the freedom to learn, made HPC a comfortable place for personal and professional growth. The company encourages taking the initiative, and my efforts were rewarded with the opportunity to attend a terminal operations conference, where I learned about the latest innovations in the terminal industry.
Experiencing Hamburg as a Dutch Intern
As a native Dutch person, working in Hamburg was an enriching experience. The warm welcome and openness of the employees at HPC made me feel at home quickly. Despite the proximity of our countries, I enjoyed discovering cultural differences between the Netherlands and Germany, like the tradition of bringing homemade cake!
I loved the vibrant atmosphere of the city and its industrial landscape. The view of the port from the office was a daily source of motivation for me.
Key Takeaways from My Internship
My biggest takeaway from this internship was the importance of initiative and open-mindedness in a multicultural work environment. These qualities help you uncover new opportunities and learn from others' experiences and cultures.
My time at HPC has deepened my interest in terminal operations and port consultancy, and I am excited to apply the skills and knowledge I’ve gained in my future career.
