With the intention to bring Hamburg's port sector experience out into the world, HPC was founded in 1976 as an independent consulting firm within HHLA (Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG) group of companies. Ever since, HPC has established its reputation as leading consultancy for tailor-made solutions in supply chain logistics, especially ports, with a specific determination towards modern terminal operations worldwide. Today, around 100 experts work with HPC around the globe.

HPC provides strategic advice to governments and investors on the development of individual facilities or in fact regional or national port and airport sectors. We have assisted our Clients in the past with full-time secondment of terminal experts and interim management supporting the implementation and improvement of existing facilities. Assignments lasted from short-term assistance up to several years returning very positive results. Amongst the projects were the interim management of the container terminal in Odessa. After a few years of positive operational and commercial development, HPC obtained an operating licence for the facility. One of our core competencies is terminal planning and design, for which we focus on logistically optimised solutions. In early project stages, our experts use sophisticated proprietary planning models, which have proven to be more than 95% accurate. Models provide our Clients with tailored annual resource requirements and associated costs to reflect the gradual development of the facility and point towards the most suitably phased development. Addressing terminal planning and design quantification is a key element. Besides accurate planning models HPC also provides simulation services as proof-of-concept and input for value engineering representing tangible benefits to the Client. This also includes the testing of different TOS setting scenarios, which, inter alia, determines the choice of the available slots for containers to be placed in the yard, enabling i.e. a comparison of stacking strategies (...read more in "software engineering").

We support you in specifying requirements as to how the terminal will work for decades to come. On the basis of process mapping we develop tailored technical specifications for all equipment types as well as IT systems and guide you through the supplier selection process. High investment products, such as container terminal equipment, are to be inspected at the manufacturer’s site as it is being built, thus ensuring quality standards and requirements are met. Careful testing before shipment and commissioning at our clients’ sites make sure that equipment and TOS are available upon delivery.

Throughout the past years, HPC has supervised the construction of more than 100 STS and several hundred RTG & RMG cranes. Reflecting the increasing need for IT integration, our experts assist in early stages of the project to allocate responsibilities towards system components to the various vendors leaving no gaps upon go-live or help define IT strategies and approaches to digitalisation (...read more in "engineering consulting" and "IT consulting").

Implementation support links concepts to reality. Our experts are experienced in determining go-live test scenarios and assess the availability and functionality of all components of a terminal.

With regard to operations this features the full functionality of all organisational sections related to the processes and the processes themselves. Equipment is being tested for all contracted functionalities and, most of all, the IT system is tested under full load in an artificial environment depicting future terminal operations to ensure complete functionality upon go-live. On the day, our staff stands by to solve any issues, which may arise to support a successful implementation.

As terminals and airports are exposed to an ever changing environment, processes must change over time. Analysing the operations in all areas we identify where procedures may be streamlined to increase productivity and to reduce cost while providing a safe and stable operational environment. Optimisation taps on the quantification of impacts that suboptimal processes have on the operations or commercial bottom line and how this changes with improvements.

We use a quantification approach supported as needed by simulation or project-specific programs which assist in identifying the scope and scale of improvements. Our optimisation service offering extends to operational procedures, supportive planning as well as seemingly peripheral elements, such as workshop, store keeping and IT system adequacy and use. Where desired, we assist in implementing the change in the organisation standing by our Clients as the changes are being realised. Need be, HPC also provides interim management through posting terminal executives to project sites to implement improvements and change.

For the maritime industry worldwide, energy sustainability has become an important topic not only to meet increasingly strict environmental regulations but especially as a means of improving profitability. Significant energy saving potential can be utilised through improvement of operations, adoption of energy-efficient technologies and use of renewable energy sources.

With this objective in mind, HPC has developed a structured approach that helps ports and terminals to develop strategies for energy consumption and emissions reduction and, at the same time, ensures maintaining or improving operational efficiency.

 Trained workforce is the determinant of successful operation. Our approach is integrated knowledge transfer. Yet, occasions may require tailored development of skillsets amongst the terminal staff.

HPC provides tailored training courses suiting the Client’s specific needs, which may inter alia include:

  • ISPS awareness, PSFO training;
  • Health and Safety performance;
  • Operations staff training (equipment and planning);
  • TOS trainings; and
  • Management courses.
