The Challenge

The concession to develop and operate the Webb Dock Container Terminal in Melbourne was awarded to Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT). The facility shall be developed into a state-of-the-art terminal featuring an unmatched degree of automation on the Australian waterfront. The proposed terminal will inter alia feature semi-automated ship-to-shore cranes, fully-automated shuttle carriers and stacking cranes. For automated terminals of such complexity, a clear view on future processes and functional system interaction is crucial for a successful implementation. With their in-depth knowledge about the automation of container terminals, HPC elaborated a comprehensive and detailed business process specification for the container terminal and the adjacent empty park. The business processes were modelled using BPMN 2.0 and subsequently agreed with the client and other stakeholders, in particular the equipment and IT system suppliers. The resulting document covers all aspects necessary for the successful implementation of the project, especially the interaction of the involved IT components, and is used as the foundation for all subsequent steps of the project.

Tasks Performed

  • Preparation of workshops with the Client in order to define the process fundamentals
  • Review workshops with the Client for a detailed discussion and final determination of the business processes
  • Interview and discussions with suppliers of container handling equipment and adjacent IT systems (like GOS, RFID, Truck Appointment Systems)
  • Interviews and business process discussions with external stakeholders like customs, work safety and other authorities
  • Modelling of business processes for the container terminal and the empty container park with BPMN 2.0 on level 2 (operational models including exceptions)
  • Elaboration of a business process specification for the operational processes of the container terminal and the empty container park

Benefit to Client

  • Take advantage of HPC's terminal automation experience (e.g. HHLA CTA's planning team)
  • Intensive focus on integration of operations, equipment suppliers and IT system providers during business process modeling
  • Concentrated training to ensure sustainable implementation of planned processes
