The Challenge

For the maritime industry worldwide, energy sustainability has become an important topic not only to meet increasingly strict environmental regulations but especially as a means of improving profitability. Against this background the Client has awarded HPC to develop a structured, model-based approach that can be used by ports and terminals to identify suitable measures to increase their energy sustainability and thus improve their environmental compatibility and profitability. As a result, the project paves the way for prosperous logistics service provision, which is in line with community and environmental requirements. A central project result is a simulation and lifecycle assessment model to configure the logistics and energy consumption of a port or terminal.

Tasks Performed

  • Develop a structured procedure that can be applied by ports and terminals to improve their level of energy sustainability
  • Prepare a generic energy sustainability measures catalogue for ports and terminals
  • Development of a simulation tool for modelling the energy consumption of a port / terminal
  • Develop a model for assessing the environmental impact of energy sustainability measures
  • Set up models for the economic assessment of energy sustainability measures
  • Verify the developed procedure and models by comprehensive field studies
  • Examine the transfer potential of the procedure in related fields of application

Benefit to Client

  • Well-structured approach to identify measures for energy efficiency improvement and to increase the use of renewable energy
  • Provision of simulation-based load profile analysis
  • Cost-effective but realistic assessment of energy sustainability measures and economic analyses
